Between 35 and 55 people gather in the historic Sisters’ Chapel at St. Mary’s Cathedral every Saturday at 9:00 a.m. for Morning Prayer. Afterwards, they make their way to the parish hall to receive food from St. Mary’s Hope and Food ministry.
No one is required to attend Morning Prayer – they do so because they have come to appreciate this offering.
We would love to share our Saturday Morning Prayer ministry with clergy and lay folks within the Diocese who would enjoy an opportunity to lead morning prayer with our Hope and Food recipients. Dean Noah Campbell provides Eucharist on the first Saturday of each month. He created a Morning Prayer bulletin that is easy to follow for leader and participants for the remaining Saturdays.
Saturday Morning Prayer begins at 9:00 a.m. and folks are usually making their way to the parish hall by 9:30am at the latest.
One of our Saturday morning volunteers, Drew Massengale, says: “At first, it can seem very daunting to participate in Morning Prayer with a group of people you don’t know, most of whom may be unfamiliar with the liturgy. But soon, you begin to notice smiles, recognize faces, learn names, and suddenly you feel God working in the world like you’ve never felt before. My week now feels incomplete without attending the Saturday Morning Hope & Food Ministry. Presiding over the Morning Prayer liturgy is such a special privilege that has connected me to a new community of worshippers, deepened my examination of Scripture, and allowed me to invest personally in the mission of St. Mary’s to be a house of prayer for all people.”
