Dear Friends in Christ,

We take those words from the prophet Habakkuk seriously. Vision is not something we rush. It is something we prayerfully discern, together.

Last November, at the 44th Convention of the Diocese of West Tennessee, delegates passed Resolution WTN 2025-2, calling us to develop a clear and cohesive vision for the future of our diocese. The 2026 Bishop’s Missionary Appeal will directly fund the next step in that work: engaging a professional consultant to guide our diocesan visioning process.

In a season of rapid change and uncertainty, we believe it is both faithful and wise to invest in thoughtful discernment. The funds raised through this appeal will primarily be used to hire a consultant who will design and facilitate listening sessions, focus groups, and surveys across our 21 counties. This structured process will help us hear from youth, young adults, clergy, lay leaders, longtime members, and newcomers alike.

Bringing in outside expertise ensures that every voice has a seat at the table and that our hopes are translated into a clear, actionable path forward. This is not simply strategic planning. It is spiritual work: listening for where the Holy Spirit is already moving and aligning ourselves with that movement.

Your gift to the 2026 Bishop’s Missionary Appeal directly supports this effort.

Give what you can. Whether it’s $10, $25, $100, or more, your generosity is an investment in clarity, courage, and shared mission. When we each contribute as we are able, we build a future rooted not in fear or reaction, but in faithful purpose.

There are other ways of donating, including gifts of appreciated stock. The Diocese has a brokerage account to which these gifts can be made, so please call our office for that information and let us know the security you intend to give, as well as the approximate amount of that gift. If you are currently over the age of 70.5, you can make gifts from your IRA required minimum distribution. Before choosing either of these options, please check with your tax or financial advisor to be sure these methods of giving are appropriate for your current financial situation.

Habakkuk reminds us that vision unfolds in God’s time. Our role is to prepare the way with intention and trust. Thank you for helping us do just that.

Peace,

The Rt. Rev. Phoebe Roaf
